Become a skilled woodworker and cabinetmaker by enrolling in the Manufacturing Technician/Techniques - Wood Products certificate and diploma programs. These programs will train you to manufacture home and office furniture, store fixtures, cabinetry, architectural millwork and other associated wood products.
Major topics include:
Selection and use of solid wood, veneers, and other materials
Reading and interpreting blueprints
Preparing sketches and shop drawings
Costing out projects
Use and maintenance of hand and power tools
Preparation of cutting lists and material requisitions
Design and construction of residential and commercial furniture and fixtures
Other areas to be covered include the design and construction of kitchen and bathroom cabinets, and preparation and application of various types of finishing materials.
Graduates of this program may receive, at the discretion of the employer, advanced standing in their apprenticeships, based on their on-the-job performance.
Admission Requirements:
Ontario Secondary School Diploma at or above the general level or its equivalent. Grade 12 English or equivalent is required.
Mature Students: Applicants aged 19 or older without an OSSD will be considered on the basis of the results of the College’s Mature Student Test. Students must posses the prerequisites even if they are applying as mature students; however, college, university, or upgrading equivalencies may be used.
Graduates of the new Ontario Secondary School Curriculum: Ontario Secondary School Diploma with courses from the College (C), University (U), University/College (M), or Open (O) preparation levels.
Required courses: Grade 12 Compulsory English (ENG 4C or ENG 4U).
Recommended courses (not used in the admission selection process): • Grade 12 (C) College and Apprenticeship Mathematics (MAP 4C) • Grade 11 or 12 (C) Construction Technology (TCJ 3C, TCJ 4C)
Graduates can find employment in commercial and residential cabinetmaking, as well as in the production and custom furniture manufacturing sector. Training in project design, planning and management often leads graduates to progressive advancement within these industries or to self-employment.
