The single largest investment most people make is in their homes. The Renovation Techniques - Construction Carpentry certificate program will provide you with the basic carpentry skills. Skills required to gain entry level employment in the construction, renovation and maintenance of houses.
Carpentry is a trade in which there is a great deal of self satisfaction, pride, and dignity associated with the work. It is an ancient and honourable trade considered to be of key importance to the building industry.
The program offers a blend of theoretical and practical training. Major topics to be covered include:
Construction safety
Hand and power tools
Building materials
Site layout
Concrete foundations
Construction of footings and foundation forms
Framing floors, walls and roofs
An introduction to plan reading, quantity estimating and the Ontario Building Code is also included in this program.
Admission Requirements:
Ontario Secondary School Diploma at or above the general level or its equivalent. Grade 12 English or equivalent is required.
Mature Students: Applicants aged 19 or older without an OSSD will be considered on the basis of the results of the College’s Mature Student Test.
Graduates of the new Ontario Secondary School Curriculum: Ontario Secondary School Diploma with courses from the College (C), University (U), University/College (M), or Open (O) preparation levels.
Required courses: Grade 12 Compulsory English (ENG 4C or ENG 4U).
Recommended courses (not used in the admission selection process): • Grade 12 (C) College and Apprenticeship Mathematics (MAP 4C) • Grade 11 or 12 (C) Construction Technology (TCJ 3C, TCJ 4C)
Graduates of this certificate may pursue progressive employment in carpentry and related work in commercial or residential new construction and renovation. Potential employers include general or subcontractors, home builders, woodworking shops, restoration contractors, lumberyards and hardware stores.
