One of the greatest benefits of Co-op is the chance to hone your job searching skills before you graduate so you are very polished in your permanent job search. The job market for Co-op is very competitive and you will have to start early and work hard to secure your co-op work term. Am I guaranteed a Co‑op work term? NO! What do I get for the extra Co‑op fees that I pay? Co-op students are assessed an annual administrative fee in addition to regular academic tuition.It is important to understand that the administrative fee provides you with extra services such as: marketing the program to employers, providing workshop resources, one-on-one mentoring from the Co‑op Advisor, delivery of special work term preparation classes, access to guest speakers, introductions to potential employers, coaching on how to “brand” yourself, résumé development, career planning, debriefing from interviews and work term assessments, field trips to employer seminars, and bringing employers to interview candidates directly on campus. Like tuition fees, co-op fees are subject to change each year. What is a Co‑op work term? Our policy for co-operative education indicates that the time spent in work terms must be no less than 30% of the time spent in academic study. The placements length depends on the Co‑op program in which you are registered: a minimum of two-12 weeks (based on a 35 hour work week) placements are required for Business, Business Admin., Business Admin. Marketing, Small Business and three-12 week placements for Accounting programs. The work term must be approved by your Co-op Advisor to ensure that you are performing relevant work and are being paid at an appropriate rate. Where can my Co‑op work term be located? If you are not placed for a work term, you may choose to:
If I don't like my Co‑op work term, what should I do? Discuss your concerns with your Co-op Advisor or Academic Advisor. Usually a discussion between you and the employer can iron out any difficulties. If this is not feasible, the Co-op Advisor may meet with you and the employer to explore solutions. Do I have to complete all Co‑op work terms to receive the Co‑op diploma? Yes! Are Co-op employers likely to hire Co-op graduates? Yes!
