Why should I take the Co‑op option of my business program?
Our Co-op options allow you to:

What are some other benefits of taking the Co-op option?

One of the greatest benefits of Co-op is the chance to hone your job searching skills before you graduate so you are very polished in your permanent job search. The job market for Co-op is very competitive and you will have to start early and work hard to secure your co-op work term.

Am I guaranteed a Co‑op work term?

NO!
However, the Co-op Department is here to facilitate the process. We work diligently on your behalf on two fronts; as we are in constant contact with companies that want to post Co-op positions through our department; and we, continually market you to companies. But ultimately, the onus is on you to obtain a work term position. In the end, it is the student’s performance, skills, and attitude that determine whether he/she is offered a co-op work term.

What do I get for the extra Co‑op fees that I pay?

Co-op students are assessed an annual administrative fee in addition to regular academic tuition.It is important to understand that the administrative fee provides you with extra services such as: marketing the program to employers, providing workshop resources, one-on-one mentoring from the Co‑op Advisor, delivery of special work term preparation classes, access to guest speakers, introductions to potential employers, coaching on how to “brand” yourself, résumé development, career planning, debriefing from interviews and work term assessments, field trips to employer seminars, and bringing employers to interview candidates directly on campus. Like tuition fees, co-op fees are subject to change each year.

The work term must be approved by your Co-op Advisor to ensure that you are performing relevant work and are being paid at an appropriate rate.

Where can my Co‑op work term be located?

Your job can be located anywhere in the world but first it must be approved by your Co-op Advisor to ensure that you are performing relevant work, you are being paid at an appropriate rate, and that the Co-op work term meets minimum guidelines as outlined by the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities.

Do I have to qualify for the Co‑op option?

Yes! By the beginning of semester two, your Program Coordinator and the Co-op Advisor will review your academic standings to date. Failure to comply with these program requirements puts you at risk of being transferred out of the Co‑op option into a non Co‑op stream of study.

What can I do if I do not get a Co-op work term?
If you are not placed for a work term, you may choose to:
  • Transfer out of the Co-op option into a non-Co-op stream of study;
  • Remain in the Co-op stream and extend your graduation date;
  • Take the work term off and return to school the following semester;
  • Accept unrelated work that does not qualify for a Co-op work term;
  • Or return to school to take more courses; this option also will require you to pay the applicable tuition fees for the semester,
  • Or completing your 2nd placement after graduation.

If I don't like my Co‑op work term, what should I do?

Discuss your concerns with your Co-op Advisor or Academic Advisor. Usually a discussion between you and the employer can iron out any difficulties. If this is not feasible, the Co-op Advisor may meet with you and the employer to explore solutions.

Is it likely that I will be invited back for my next work term by my current employer?

Yes!
If you do a good job, most employers will be happy to have you return. Both of you will benefit from the added experience you will bring to your next work assignment. As an added bonus, some employers keep a student on in a part-time capacity during the school year. You are able to gain more experience and earn money while you attend your next semester of classes. However, if you prefer to have your 2nd placement with a different employer, this is possible.
