Overview
A GIS (Geographical Information System) is a data management system wherein data is spatially located with quantitative and qualitative attributes of an object, queried, analyzed and applied. GIS is a burgeoning field and is part of a necessary skill set for countless occupations in both frontline and management positions in areas such as resource and urban planning, tourism, transportation, emergency services, law enforcement, land use, business, and social/ health services.
This four-day course will provide an understanding of what GIS can do and how it is currently being used. You will learn the basic functions of GIS and gain an understanding of its power and how it can be utilized within your organization and specific department. This is an interactive, hands-on course that we are sure you will find very interesting and useful.
Learning Objectives
Explain what GIS is and outline its capabilities
Create GIS maps in ArcMap
Demonstrate the ability to use GPS as an effective tool to create data to be used within GIS including map datums and projections
Access and query a GIS database
Knowledge of geographic data, how it’s made, and where to get it
Knowledge of what spatial analysis is and how to solve geographic problems using ArcGIS analysis tools

Who should attend
This course has been designed for those who are new to GIS and ArcGIS, infrequent users, and anyone wanting a better understanding of what GIS can do for them. This course can be delivered at the college or at another location of your choice, on a schedule that suits your group. All computer hardware software and printed materials are supplied.
