Canadore College and the local School College Work Initiative (SCWI) team are partnering to host a nautical race of electric radio-controlled boats built by high school students on Friday.

Ten area high school students were chosen to construct the boats as part of an after school activity. The activity provided them with the skills and knowledge to repair, replace and maintain marine and small engines. “Learning tends to be more meaningful when students have the opportunity to apply the textbook knowledge in a fun way – like building a boat for a race,” said Tracie Marsh-Fior, Dean of Skilled Trades. “The School College Work Initiative provides a direct link between high school curriculum and the hands-on learning that takes place at the college level. It provides students with an opportunity to explore future career options and obtain advanced standings in postsecondary programs.”

The local SCWI program is supported by: Conseil scolaire catholique Franco-Nord, Conseil scolaire public du Nord-Est de l’Ontario, Nbisiing Secondary School, Near North District School Board and Nipissing-Parry Sound Catholic District School Board.

Prospective students and the public are invited to cheer on the students and meet faculty and staff at the race at the Education Centre Campus pond on Friday, June 10 at 10:30 a.m.

Canadore College has over 65 full-time quality programs, outstanding faculty and student services and boasts the highest graduation rate amongst the 24 public colleges in Ontario. Dual credit studies between Canadore and SCWI for the upcoming year include: Apprenticeship Level 1 – Skills, Early Childhood Education, Communication Arts, Counselling, Culinary and Hospitality, Indigenous Wellness, Practical Nursing and Skilled Trades.
