Canadore Students Partner with Police Services

Police Foundations MOUStarting this year, Canadore Police Foundations students will be getting a first-hand look at their future careers by working with on-the-job police officers.

Canadore College signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the North Bay Police Service, Ontario Provincial Police and the Anishinabek Police Service introducing the new Mentorship Program on December 4.

Through the program, 15 second year students will be paired with police officers from the partnering agencies. The mentorship will expose students to the working environment of the police officer which will help them prepare for the application process.

Students will also have the opportunity to make contacts and network in their possible future place of employment. At the same time the agencies will have the opportunity to assess the suitability of the students as potential recruits.

“The mentorship program will give the students an opportunity to learn more about their future working environment. No amount of classroom instruction can substitute for this kind of experience. At the same time the partner police services will have the opportunity to assess the potential of future applicants which is an advantage that most other applicants would not have,” said Leo deJourdan, coordinator of the Police Foundations program.

On hand for the signing were Canadore President Barbara Taylor, Chief Paul Cook of North Bay Police Service, Chief Superintendent Scott Tod of the O.P.P. and Inspector Claude Chum of the Anishinabek Police Service.

“This is an excellent opportunity for our students. This initiative between the College and the local police services will provide our students with the opportunity to apply the theory they have learned in a practical setting,” said Canadore President Barbara Taylor.
