Panthers crowned by Royals at home
The Canadore College Panthers men's and women's volleyball teams were swept on their home court Friday, dropping matches to the Redeemer Royals in Ontario Colleges Athletic Association action.
The Lady Panthers exploded onto the court offensively, winning the first set 25-16, but lost their winning momentum, dropping the next three sets 15-25, 23-25 and 18-25. The Royals offence was led by Chantel Schutten with 17 total points, while the Panthers were paced by Kristen Verkuyl, with all of her points coming on 10 kills.
"I thought we came out really strong in the first set, but then we started to slow down," said rookie left side Kayla Rose, who had six points on the night with four kills and two stuff blocks. "We will be ready for the next game,"
The ladies hope to improve their mental game quickly as they host the Fanshawe Falcons at the Education Centre Gym today at 5 p.m.
On the men's side, the Panthers were unable to complete a full winning set. They battled hard against the Royals but lost 3-0 (23-25, 23-25 and 16-25).
The close game was a nail biter for the fans and led to several exciting rallies.
The Royals were led by Ryan Talsma, scoring a total of 21 points on 16 kills and five serving aces. On the Panthers side of the court, they were led by captain Peter Clifford, who had 13 points, and Jeremy Tremblay, with 11.
"We just had problems carrying over the positive energy into the next set, and let our mistakes weigh us down," said setter Jonathan Hoadley.
The men need to rally together as they prepare to face off against the Falcons tonight at 7 p.m. at the Education Centre Gym.
