Canadore Expanding Student Housing
Canadore College will be adding a total of 236 beds to its residence capacity in the next year to accommodate living quarters for full-time students from outside of the region.
Approximately 20 per cent of full-time Canadore students live in residence. Present facilities can only accommodate 497 students. For the past five years, this has resulted in a waitlist of more than 150 learners looking to be in residence.
As a result of this demand, the College will be building a new apartment complex with construction starting in Summer 2011, ready for a Fall 2012 move-in. The brand-new facility will add 200 beds to the current complement.
“Canadore is very pleased to be making this announcement. The College is growing and so is our student population. This next phase is necessary to maintain that growth. This complex will be built with functionality and student success in mind. We are pleased to be partnering with Campus Living Centres on this essential project,” said Canadore President George Burton.
In order to immediately address the under-capacity issue, the College will be offering 36 rooms at its new Canadore Loft Residence complex, located at Algonquin Ave. and Main St., in the heart of North Bay’s downtown core.
“These units are an attractive alternative to traditional residence for returning students and mature learners. The space offers students a new level of independence at an off-campus location, and still provides the same strong and supportive service environment to help our students achieve success in their postsecondary careers,” said Shawn Chorney, Acting Vice-President of Student Services and Human Resources.
Canadore and the City of North Bay have been working toward solutions that make students feel welcome as they relocate to the region. One of the biggest hurdles of transitioning is finding safe, affordable and stable housing. The plans for residence expansion are a big step in alleviating this potential stressor.
“The City is very proud to be supporting Canadore’s growth plans. The College is a vital part of our region’s economy, and its increased development is linked to our community’s growth. A healthy college leads to a healthy community. We look forward to showing out-of-town students the many benefits of living in North Bay, and enticing them to stay with this early positive experience,” said Al McDonald, Mayor of the City of North Bay.
The addition of the new beds will increase overall residence capacity to 733 spots and provides more opportunity for out-of-town learners to access over 65 full-time quality programs, driven and supported by outstanding faculty and student services.
Canadore College boasts the highest graduation rate amongst the 24 public colleges in Ontario.
