Skilled trades workers are in high demand locally, provincially and across Canada. The dedicated labs at Canadore’s Commerce Court Campus are fully equipped to train students in a variety of dynamic, specialized fields.

The College provides a superior skilled trades learning facility. From welding to autobody, plumbing to carpentry, the specialized labs at the campus have industry standard equipment and highly qualified professors, most of which still work in their respective industries.

Autobody - In this lab, students learn how to repair and replace various vehicle components in a real-world setting using state-of-the-art equipment. Students also get to practice painting in the customized paint booth.

Carpentry - This lab is one of the largest in Ontario with over 14,000 sq. ft. of training space; it is large enough to have two full size houses built within its walls.

Electrical - In this 2,200 sq. ft. versatile and transforming lab, students are trained on industry standard tools with a focus on residential and commercial wiring methods.

Industrial Maintenance - This 4,000 sq. ft. lab is equipped with high performance lab equipment including individual training stations for the construction of industrial and mobile hydraulic systems and two hydrostatic transmission training stations.

Machinist - Approximately 8,000 sq. ft in size, this lab features precision equipment to train students for the high volume milling and turning. Students receive extensive training on manual machines as well as automated Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machining equipment.

Motive Power - This 8,000 sq. ft lab includes industry standard tools, diagnostic equipment, and lifts. Students work on all types of vehicles from standard automobiles to industrial heavy duty equipment and have the opportunity to work on the latest technology by way of new vehicle donations.

Plumbing - This 1,800 sq. ft. lab is essentially two combined areas where students gain experience individually and in a team setting. The lab areas are set up to simulate multi levels of an actual residence and are equipped with the industry specific tools. The students have the opportunity to build residential and commercial plumbing systems, install the fixtures and test all systems.

Small Engine/Motorcycle Repair - These combined labs offer space for a number of the programs’ hands-on components. Students work on everything from lawnmowers to chainsaws, V8 inboard marine engines to street motorcycles. Unique to the lab is a water-filled test tank, large enough to fit highpowered outboard engines and full size personal watercraft.

Welding - In this 4,700 sq. ft. lab, students learn at one of 33 individual welding stations. Students become familiar with multiple welding processes and work on machines common in industry.

Canadore offers 11 skilled trades programs at its Commerce Court Campus and a number of apprenticeship options, where students can earn while they learn. One of the benefits of having many of the trades programs under one roof is that it allows networking and a sharing of skill sets.

“Labs benefit students by way of hands-on training which in a trade is instrumental to success. The practical of this training cannot be attained from classroom work,” said professor Scott McLauglin.

“I really like the way the instructors teach the program. We get theory that directly relates to the work we have to do in the labs and then get tested on it. What we are learning is what is required in the field,” said Electrical Techniques student Kris Brune.

The skilled trades sector is fast-growing and diverse, offering a range of career options.

With more than 150 trades in Ontario, there is a trade for every interest and aptitude. Canadore’s programs and facilities offer students specific training where they acquire transferable skills that can take them all over the world.
