Canadore College Expands Media Centre For New Programs
McGuinty Government Invests In Student Training

A new integrated media hub at Canadore College will provide students access to multimedia technology and equipment and help retain eight jobs in the North Bay area.

With $1 million of support from the province, the college is developing a digital media workspace that will help launch two new programs: mobile application development as well as digital cinematography. Improvements to the new 2,000-square foot integrated media hub include hardware and software for student labs, wireless infrastructure and building a working television studio.

Making infrastructure improvement in Northern Ontario communities is a key component of the plan laid out in Ontario’s 2011 Budget – Turning the Corner, to create and support 10,000 new and existing jobs for Ontario families and to strengthen local economies.

“By investing $1 million in this project, we are helping Canadore College build the capacity to train young northerners close to home in new emerging fields,” said Monique Smith, MPP for Nipissing. “It is wonderful that Canadore is launching new exciting programs that are currently not available in Northern Ontario.”

“This investment demonstrates our government’s firm commitment to help our people acquire the skills they need to compete in today’s economy and to ensure the North’s future prosperity,” said Michael Gravelle, Minister of Northern Development, Mines and Forestry and Chair of the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC).

“We are grateful for the government’s ongoing support of postsecondary education. The financial support for the Integrated Media Centre at Canadore from the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund will enable the College to revitalize its existing programs to a position of leadership in the province and also provides a foundation for the launch of programs for the new economy,” said Canadore College President George Burton.
