For Immediate Release: March 29, 2004

Toronto District School Board - Canadore College
Partnership Prepares Grade 7 And 8 Students
For Their Future

The Toronto District School Board (TDSB) and Canadore College launched a unique pilot program that will help grade 7 and 8 students make informed decisions about their future with the signing of a partnership agreement on Wednesday, March 24, 2004.

The partnership will "kick off" with a career conference for grade 7 and 8 students at Canadore College in North Bay on May 20 and 21, 2004. More than 250 participants, including students, parents and teachers, will explore career opportunities through a choice of workshops.
"Canadore College is very excited about this new partnership with the Toronto District School Board," said Canadore President Barbara Taylor. "The career conference, which is only the beginning of our partnership, is a wonderful opportunity for us to promote the various career opportunities available to students and introduce options they wouldn?t have been exposed to otherwise. We?re also quite excited to be able to showcase our wonderful programs, faculty and of our course, our beautiful campus to guests traveling from the GTA."
Students will listen to a heartbeat, analyze water samples, and take a person's blood pressure as they explore careers in health care and biotechnology in the "We Live and Breathe" workshop. In the "Service with a Smile" workshop students will experience what it is like to manage a hotel, study nutrition, and look at what it means to be a chef as they explore careers in travel and tourism.
Each participant will attend three of the ten experiential workshops being offered. The common denominator for all workshops is that students will leave with a better idea of their interests and skills, having explored some of the career possibilities connected to their skills, and with information on the steps to help them achieve their career goals.
This partnership agreement between Canadore College and the TDSB is part of the Pathways for Success initiative, which focuses on "full-spectrum education" where all destination pathways (apprenticeship, college, university, workplace) are equally valued and supported. All students, parents, staff and community members are integral to the success of this vision and will be involved throughout the process of planning for student success.
