Canadore Students Find a New Place To Call Home
This fall, 146 Canadore College students will find a new place to call home, as they become the first residents of the College's new residence, which was officially opened on Wednesday, August 18, 2004.
"Going away to school is about much more than just attending classes, it's also about meeting new people, making new friends and discovering what it's like to live away from home," said Cindy Boston, Chair of the Canadore College Board of Governors. "I know that within the walls of this new residence, our students will forge strong friendships and am confident that they will create many lasting memories."
The new residence represents a $7 million investment by the College and is reflective of Canadore's commitment to provide an exceptional living and learning environment for its students and to contribute to the economic prosperity of the region.
Located at the bottom of College Drive, the new six-story apartment-style residence features 146 rooms. As 60 percent of Canadore's student body do not live within commuting distance of the college, this facility fills a great need for on-campus housing and complements the College's existing townhouse-style residences, which accommodate 350 students every year.
Already, the new residence is full for the 2004 academic year and its first tenants include 17 international students from China, who are enrolled in one of Canadore's aviation programs.
"Canadore College is committed to leading in student success and to providing a challenging yet supportive environment for our students. The opening of our new residence is a clear demonstration of this focus," said Canadore College President Barbara Taylor. "It also adds to our excitement for the upcoming academic year, as we look forward to welcoming students into this new space, and to the College and city."
