Canadore Student Wins Women In Technology Bursary

Canadore College student and graduate Leslie Guillemette was recently awarded a Women in Technology Memorial Bursary, in memory of the women students who were slain at Montreal's École Polytechnique 14 years ago (December 6, 1989). Leslie was one of four outstanding students from Ontario's 21 colleges of applied arts and technology and three college institutes of technology and advanced learning who were recognized this year.

The students, who represent different geographic regions of Ontario, were chosen on the basis of academic excellence, professional promise, community service and need. The Women in Technology Memorial Bursary Fund was established by contributions from Ontario's 21 colleges of applied arts and technology and three college institutes of technology and advanced learning and Inco Limited. It is administered by La Cité collégiale, the system's first French-language college. The bursaries, which are awarded annually, were initiated by the Committee on Equity in Education and Employment of the Association of Colleges of Applied Arts and Technology of Ontario.

The award of $500 was presented to Leslie prior to the Canadore College Board of Governors meeting on March 16, 2004. In congratulating Leslie, Canadore College President Barbara Taylor remarked, ?It?s an honour to have one of our student?s recognized by this award, and Leslie is certainly deserving of this recognition. She has demonstrated ongoing academic excellence while maintaining a strong involvement in student social activities.?

Ms. Guillemette is a native of North Bay and is a graduate of Canadore College?s Office Administration and Computer Systems Technology ? Networking programs. She is currently enrolled in the one-year Interactive Multimedia post-diploma program at the College.

In speaking of the award, Guillemette commented that she is very proud of her accomplishments, specifically, maintaining a 4.0 grade point average while balancing family life. ?I really like Canadore? said Guillemette, ?it?s very personal. If you work hard, they will offer you great amounts of support to help you succeed.?

Leslie Guillemette?s award was among the more than $45,000, which has been given out by Canadore College over the past week. On March 11, 2004, Canadore held it?s 32nd Annual Scholarship Awards Day, where more than 160 students were recognized with scholarships and bursaries from private donors. In total, Canadore provides more than $900,000 each year in scholarships and bursaries, to assist students as they work towards achieving their postsecondary goals.
