Background:
On Saturday, April 22, 2006, 31 students from 8 school boards will compete in Skills Canada – Ontario’s 2006 Qualifying Competitions. Over the course of the day, students will showcase their talents in Small Powered Equipment, T.V. Video Production, Carpentry – Individual, Internet – Web Page Design, Culinary Arts, and Precision Machining contests. Each contest has specific guidelines of a project to complete during the allotted time. The top two or three students in each contest will advance to the 17th Ontario Technological Skills Competition being held from May 1 - 3, 2006 at Waterloo’s RIM Park and Manulife Financial Sportsplex.
Skills Canada – Ontario has partnered with six Ontario Colleges to offer Qualifying Competitions throughout the province for the past two years. Due to the significant increase in the number of school boards interested in sending competitors to the Ontario Technological Skills Competition (OTSC) in 2004, a cornerstone event of Skills Canada – Ontario, Qualifying Competitions were introduced.
“Career options in the skilled trades are highly dynamic and often people in these fields do work that benefits our everyday lives,” says Gail Smyth, Executive Director of Skills Canada – Ontario. “The Qualifying Competitions encourage youth to showcase their talents and challenge their skills amongst peers.”
Skills Canada – Ontario is a not-for-profit organization that promotes careers in the skilled trades and technologies as viable, first-choice career options for youth.
