One-day powwow at Education Centre
North Bay, ON, September 14, 2006 — Nipissing University and Canadore College are hosting a one-day powwow on Friday, September 15, from 11:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. beside the pond area at the Education Centre.
Traditional Native drummers, singers and dancers, many of them students and faculty, will be performing as part of the powwow. The event is meant as a welcome for First Nation and Metis students from all over Canada as well as to celebrate and share Native traditions.
Nipissing and Canadore currently have more than 500 Native and Metis students enrolled in courses. Many travel long distances to attend school in North Bay, from as far west as Alberta to James Bay and Northern Quebec.
“Our goal in hosting this one-day powwow is to assist Aboriginal students in building networks, partnerships and friendships among their peers. As well, it is a terrific opportunity for the campus community to participate in a social activity that is rooted in First Nation traditions,” said Laurie McLaren, aboriginal services and programs administrator for Nipissing University.
Chief Marianna Couchie of Nipissing First Nation will be speaking and will be carrying Nipissing First Nation’s Eagle Staff in the Grand Entry.
Everyone is welcome to attend and admission is free.
