North Bay, ON - Canadore College, I LUV North Bay, the City of North Bay, West Ferris Minor Hockey Association, and Dawstar Television and Video Production Launched North Bay’s first pond hockey tournament today.
Mayor Victor Fedeli, Barbara Taylor, President of Canadore College, retired NHL player Bill Houlder and all the community partners announced the upcoming community event which will be held at Canadore College on the Education Centre’s pond on February 25 and 26.
The Canadian Pond Hockey Face Off is anticipated to be an annual outdoor hockey tournament. It is the first of its kind in the area and one of the only “pond hockey” tournaments being played on an actual pond.
The event will be run strictly by volunteers with a number of Canadore’s Recreation and Leisure Services students already signed up to pitch in.
Age categories for the tournament will be: Tyke/Novice-8 years and under, Atom/Pee Wee-12 and under, Bantam/Midget-17 and under, Junior-21 and under, and a Women’s and Men’s category.
The goal of the tournament is to acknowledge pond hockey as part of our national heritage and to raise money for improving local outdoor area rinks and support North Bay Minor Hockey.
“We are pleased to work with our community partners to host this event. The tournament, which is the first of its kind, is an opportunity for the community to come together to celebrate our unique Canadian heritage,” said Canadore President Barbara Taylor.
