Increasing Learning Pathways for Aboriginal Students
Canadore College and the Ontario Native Education Counselling Association (ONECA) signed an articulation agreement today between ONECA’s Native Counsellor Training Program (NCTP) and Canadore College’s Indigenous Wellness and Addictions Prevention (IWAP) program.
“This agreement will reduce the amount of time and financial resources required by students to complete the diploma. It provides NCTP graduates with the option of pursuing postsecondary studies at Canadore while recognizing their past academic accomplishments,” said Laura Kerr, Director, Aboriginal Learning Unit.
Professor Peter Beaucage stated: “It will also benefit graduates who plan to further their studies within the health care field.”
Objectives of the articulation agreement are to:
-Ensure quality programming for Aboriginal students;
-Improve Aboriginal accessibility and retention in post secondary training programs;
-Respond to the employment and training needs within Aboriginal communities;
-Contribute to Aboriginal advancement towards self-governance, economic development and self-sufficiency.
The agreement was signed today by Canadore President Barbara Taylor, Laura Kerr, ONECA President Rhea Assinewe and Roxane Manitowabi, Executive Director, ONECA.
