MEDIA ALERT
For Immediate Release: August 30, 2004

Everyone Wins In Canadian Forces
and Canadore College Partnership

Over the last year, Canadore College and the Canadian Forces have established a partnership, which creates a framework for students and graduates of Canadore’s Aviation Technician – Avionics Maintenance program to take the specialized skills they have acquired in school and put them to use as Avionics Technicians.

On Tuesday, August 31, 2004, eleven current Canadore Avionics students will be presented with their enrolment certificates under the provisions of the Non Commissioned Member Subsidized Education Plan (NCM SEP). The ceremony will take place at Canadore’s Aviation Campus (55 Aviation Avenue), in the hangar, beginning at 11:00 a.m.

Lieutenant Colonel Michel Otis, Commander 21 Squadron /Canadian Forces Base, North Bay, will be on hand to swear in and present enrolment certificates to the new recruits.

The Canadian Forces established the NCM SEP over a year ago, to attract individuals to several specific skilled occupations within the Canadian Forces, including Avionics. Through the NCM SEP, selected applicants will complete the two-year Avionics Technician program at Canadore College, that fulfills all or most of the initial occupation training requirements of the Canadian Forces.

The benefits of the NCM SEP are numerous, as participants:
-are guaranteed employment with the Canadian Forces upon graduation;
-receive a salary and benefits while in school; and
-have all costs associated with the program, such as tuition, books and instruments, paid for by the Department of National Defence.

In January 2004 two of Canadore’s Avionics students were enrolled into this program at a similar ceremony.

The national selection board met again in the spring of 2004, and approximately half of nationally selected applicants have chosen to attend Canadore’s Avionics program, including a current Canadore student, who will be entering into his 2nd year of the Avionics program.
