IPE in Action

We have developed several interprofessional events which give our students, from a variety of programs, the opportunity to learn from, with and about each other.

These IPE experiences range from collaborative learning in the classroom to collaborative practice in various clinical settings.

IPE Learning Outcomes

  1. Describe their own professional role and responsibilities and the general scope of practice of other health professionals to colleagues and patients/clients
  2. Appreciate the relationship between one’s own professional role and roles of other health professionals.
  3. Participate collaboratively as a team member to support patient/client outcomes.
  4. Demonstrate knowledge and skills linked to interprofessional practice.
  5. Appreciate value of and use of team approaches for improved patient client outcomes.
Five Week Student Tutorial Session

IPE in Action 3This activity allows for an extended reach beyond existing students and disciplines to include students on clinical placements in North Bay from other provincial universities. The continuation of these sessions will allow students to contribute to an interprofessional patient plan of care, learn team facilitation skills, group dynamic concepts and an increased understanding of roles and responsibilities of various health disciplines. This experience is provided in the Fall semester.

These tutorial sessions are small group discussions that are provided to a varied group of health science students (6-10) that are in placement in the North Bay area. The sessions are two hours per week over a five week period.

Collaborative Skills Workshops

IPE in Action 4These workshops provide safe opportunities for students to work together in resolving a variety of patient situations. As the students learn to work together to enhance patient outcomes, they will learn about each other’s scope of practice and how to work together more effectively. All students will be expected to learn how to work in interprofessional environments and create positive work environments to provide patient-centered care. This experience occurs throughout the Fall semester.

The workshops provide second year students from the practical nursing, respiratory therapy and BScN programs the opportunity to participate in three different patient case studies. Each case runs for three consecutive weeks allowing all of the students from each program the opportunity to participate.

Large Case Based Discussion

IPE in Action 5A large case base discussion involving all second year practical nursing, BScN and respiratory therapy students. Students are divided into interprofessional groups and presented with a patient case.

The session is two hours in duration. During this time students are expected to create an interprofessional care plan based on the patient case. The emphasis is on interprofessional patient centred care.

This activity is held in both the Fall and Winter semesters.

IPE Clinical Placement

Clinical placements will allow for students to integrate their IP knowledge and skills and collaborate in the delivery of care to a group of clients. The students will learn to work together in a collegial environment to deliver safe, effective, patient-centered care. This is the most complex and integrative activity provided to students. This is an opportunity for students from a variety of health care disciplines to develop an increased understanding of the expertise that each discipline brings to the solution of health problems.

Students with a keen interest in interprofessionalism will self select to participate in these student interprofessional teams. They will participate in one introductory tutorial and then continue to meet regularly for patient themed tutorials, over the four week time frame of the placement. At some point during the later stages or on the completion of their clinical experience they will be asked to offer a group presentation to the practice setting. Students will be on the unit at varying times throughout the week depending on their existing clinical placements (asynchronous exposure to the same clients).

This activity is offered in the winter semester when students are in their pregraduate clinical placements.

Simulation Bootcamp

IPE Sim bootcampThis activity is designed to provide students, in their upper year, the opportunity to collaborate on a high fidelity patient simulation. Students from a variety of health disciplines including practical nursing, BScN, respiratory therapy and medical students are brought together for a four hour acute care patient simulation bootcamp.

Students will gain a true appreciation for the skills involved in successful patient centred collaboration. They will enhance their knowledge and understanding of each other’s scope of practice.

This activity is offered in the Fall semester.
