AccessAbility Services has assistive technologies available to students on campus in the AccessAbility Resource Centre Room C261 and the Learning Disabilities (LD) Resource Centre (C253). The computers are loaded with assistive technologies. For example, screen reading software such as Kurzweil 3000, or textHELP! Read & Write, and mind mapping software such as Inspiration and Smart Draw are available on our resource centre computers.
The department can also provide access to a number of handheld devices (from pen and paper to PDA’s including Pocket PC’s, a variety of Palm and Visor handheld PDA’s, and portable MP3 players - used for text to speech on a short-term loan basis.
Students gain access to the equipment on the recommendation of a counsellor. Once registered with the office as users, students can drop into the labs any time during the school day. After hours use is posted. Staff on duty are available to assist and provide training with the software and equipment. Use of all the adaptive technology is free for all students registered with the AccessAbility Services.
