Diabetes Education Ontario College Graduate Certificate

New ProgramThe Diabetes Education Graduate program offers a firm foundation in current clinical approaches to diabetes education. It is designed for Registered Nurses (RN), Registered Practical Nurses (RPN), Registered Dieticians (RD), Chiropodists, and Pharmacists who wish to specialize in the field of diabetes education. Any regulated health care professional from a regulatory college identified in the RPHA Ontario is also eligible if you are currently able to practice in Ontario. Students have five years to complete the program with an overall average grade of 65% or higher. This graduate program is available entirely through distance education.

Textbook(s) are approximately $550.00.

Note: There are additional requirements for becoming recognized as a Diabetes Educator through the Canadian Diabetes Educator Certification Board. For more information, please go to www.cdecb.ca.

Admission Requirements: Proof of registration as a regulated health professional in Ontario.

Diabetes: The Basics

This course is designed for health care educators who want to increase their understanding of the disease process and management of diabetes. It is proven that control of diabetes reduces the risk of complications for people with diabetes. Participants in this course will examine the essential elements for diabetes control – balance of food, physical activity and medication.

Introduction to Patient Education

This course will discuss learning styles and readiness to learn as they relate to people with diabetes. The role of the adult educator and effective teaching strategies are examined. Participants will design lesson plans and evaluation techniques. Prerequisite: DEC105.

Living with Diabetes

This course is designed for health care providers who are working or planning to work in the field of diabetes education. Participants will examine hypoglycaemia and hyperglycaemia, and their impact on diabetes management. Participants will discuss and illustrate teaching strategies for use with clients who have special needs, such as learning disabilities, or visual or language impairments. Cultural issues, especially those that deal with the incidence of diabetes among First Nations people, are presented. Prerequisite: DEC210.

Special Issues with Diabetes

This course examines diabetes in pregnancy, gestational diabetes, and diabetes in children, adolescents and the elderly. Long-term complications that people with diabetes may experience are discussed. Participants examine the design and evaluation of diabetes education programs. Prerequisite: DEC315.
