Students in this course will write and respond to the writing of peers and published writers, and will present their writing in written form. By providing an atmosphere in which writing is valued, by initiating writing exercises, by focusing attention on patterns that elicit positive responses, and by establishing quotas and time lines, this course will create frameworks that will facilitate students’ creative writing. Prerequisite: First year communications course.

Writing Short Stories is an introductory course for the aspiring story writer that focuses on the particularities of this literary genre. Character development, narrative unity and plot construction are explored by analyzing selected short stories and participating in writing exercises. In the latter part of the course, students follow a step-by-step approach to producing a story suitable for publication.

Students improve fluency in written English through constant writing and frequent revision; they develop skills in observation and the sharing of personal experience, and become aware of the relationship of form to content (i.e., using language to tell the story effectively). Students have an opportunity to improve their writing skills while fulfilling a desire to tell their own stories.

This course emphasizes the skills necessary for developing an original short dramatic script idea. Providing a structured developmental process, we will begin with researching and evaluating story concepts, writing an outline, treatment and first draft, and revision and polishing of a final draft, which will be marketed for sale before the end of the term.

This course develops students’ skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing at a more advanced level. Focus is placed on the forms, conventions and strategies of written and oral communication in the context of the workplace. Prerequisite: CMM125.

This course provides an introduction to print journalism – in particular, daily and weekly newspapers. Students will study specific audience populations, the inter-reliance of advertising and editorial (news) content, staffing responsibilities, production, and distribution. The course will provide experiential exercises in defining news, an introduction to writing a basic news story, news photography, and an overview of the history of journalism in Canada. This course is designed for students who are beginning studies in the field of journalism.

Through lessons, exercises and study of research material, students will write a variety of news stories to professional standards. This course is designed for students who are in their first year of college studies leading to a diploma in journalism, as well as to students who are interested in writing for the media. It is of interest to anyone writing material for newspapers. Prerequisite CEA1039.
