CEA926 Paint the Town Material List Dates: Aug 23 to Aug 27; 8:30am to 4:30pm Week 8 - August 30 to September 3 Introduction to Basketry CEA272-30904 In this course students will learn the basic techniques of basketry. To begin, students will make a ribbed basket using grapevine, dyed and natural reed and some materials gathered from nature. Natural materials may include iris and lily leaves, iris stalks, bindweed, rush and cattails. All natural materials have been previously gathered by the instructor and will be available for use in the class. Next, students will be introduced to spoked basketry by making a small round basket using dyed reed. Plaiting will be demonstrated in order to make a Shaker Cheese Basket with flat reed. This basket may be dyed using a natural dye, made either from birch bark or black walnut. A coiling project using extra-long pine needles from the southern U.S. will complete the course. This course will allow you to work at your own skill level and will lay the foundation for designing and creating future baskets on your own.
