This technical course is designed for artists who are passionate about colour and thirst to be able to freely express it! It is one thing to know how to mix a certain hue, but do you know how to recognize, manipulate and change the visual qualities of a colour? In this course we will not only be mixing colours, but will delve into understanding in-depth subtleties, how to achieve a colour’s different qualities and why each quality occurs. This course will be a feast of knowledge for either seasoned pro or rank beginner. The knowledge obtained in this course is fundamental to colour itself and will benefit handling of any media. You will be learning by using a variety of media - primarily oil paints. All materials specified are health-friendly, and in complete consideration of sensitivities and allergies. Learning to draw is in great part learning to really see what you are looking at. You then take that three-dimensional scene or object and translate it onto a two-dimensional surface. Using your drawing medium of choice (pencil, charcoal, paint, pastel, ink), you will receive instruction in all types of drawing. Landscape, wildlife, portraiture, life and still life will be explored during this course. Texture, the use of light and shadow, and composition will also be covered. Dates: Aug 23 to Aug 27; 8:30am to 4:30pm Week 8 - August 30 to September 3 Introduction to Basketry CEA272-30904
In this course students will learn the basic techniques of basketry. To begin, students will make a ribbed basket using grapevine, dyed and natural reed and some materials gathered from nature. Natural materials may include iris and lily leaves, iris stalks, bindweed, rush and cattails. All natural materials have been previously gathered by the instructor and will be available for use in the class. Next, students will be introduced to spoked basketry by making a small round basket using dyed reed. Plaiting will be demonstrated in order to make a Shaker Cheese Basket with flat reed. This basket may be dyed using a natural dye, made either from birch bark or black walnut. A coiling project using extra-long pine needles from the southern U.S. will complete the course. This course will allow you to work at your own skill level and will lay the foundation for designing and creating future baskets on your own. Instructor: Sheila Ziman
