Complimentary, effective framing is critical to both the appearance and preservation of artwork and treasures. Increase your awareness of what constitutes good framing as you explore topics including types of mat boards, the elements of design, colour tones, and how to be creative in matching mats and frames to a piece of art. Instruction and discussions will include the latest in framing techniques and materials available as well as how to mount prints like a professional. Ample opportunity will be provided to practice your skills with quality mat cutters. Whether your interest is in framing original art, prints, photographs, or making shadow boxes, you will be able to apply what you have learned to complete the finished product: a piece of well framed work.

Exploring Your Creativity in Pastel

This workshop is designed for both students who want to use pastel as their prime medium and painters in other media (acrylics, watercolours, oils) who are looking for a way to add an exciting element to their artwork. The use of soft pastel will be explored as a compositional (planning) tool, as a means to add layers of line and colour to mixed media work and as a stand-alone medium. A variety of pastel materials, techniques and approaches will be explored. Students will work from photographic reference, still life set-ups and (weather permitting) plein air. Both representational and abstract styles will be encouraged.

Paint: A Creative Medium

This course provides students with the opportunity to pursue and painting medium they choose. Watercolour, oil, acrylic and casein, on board, canvas board, stretched canvas and a variety of paper and paper weights, are all possible options and combinations. Instructor Carey Carrick has expertise in all of the media and is eager to encourage beginners and advanced students alike to reach their full potential. Techniques in all media will be demonstrated as students request. Specific concepts will be covered for beginners. Explore the diverse terrain surrounding North Bay. Spend the week creating majestic landscapes, breathtaking macro and incredible night photographs. Share techniques to improve compositions, master depth of field, and the use light to create dynamic images. “Everyone has their own voice, vision and style. It’s just a matter of bringing it out.” Daily reviews will confirm what’s working and help each student get from where they are, to where they want to be.

Advanced Adobe Photoshop Techniques

This is a five-day workshop exploring colour correction techniques, advanced masking techniques, retouching strategies, and combining filters and effects to create alternate works. Photoshop users already comfortable with the basics and working with layers will benefit from these powerful, time-saving tools. This is a combination of parts of the instructor’s Digital Imaging for Photographers Intermediate Workshop series.

Painted and Embroidered Rural Landscapes

This class is for students who would like to create a landscape in embroidery and textile paints. The theme will focus on rural and meadow images. Students will use a variety of textile paints and crayons on cotton or silk fabric to create their backgrounds. Free-motion machine embroidery will be taught to those who are interested. Hand embroidery will be the focus as each student learns to interpret many aspects of the rural landscape theme such as trees, rocks, shrubs, grasses, flowers, fields, hills, buildings, and farm animals. Students should choose an image that reflects their abilities. Design size: Within 8" x 11". Prerequisite: Basic knowledge of surface embroidery.
