Beginning with single-light set-ups and techniques and progressing to multiple-light set-ups, the workshop will also address balancing light sources of different colour temperatures and how to photograph difficult-to-render subjects such as glass, metal and jewellery. The technique is very different from traditional wet-felting methods and is easy to learn. Special barbed felting needles are used to catch and bind the scales of the wool fibre together. Needle felting can be done by hand or by machine. If you have a needle felting machine, bring it; if not there will be machines available for you to try. You will learn the basics of needle felting on a simple project and then move on to more complex projects as you become familiar with the process. Surface decoration will be explored in full as we look at various ways to introduce imagery by incorporating the use of found objects, patterns, resist, water etching, stenciling and image transfer with personalized stamps. Projects include functional and decorative pieces such as platters, round and square lidded vessels, sculptural birds, bowls and instruments.
