Artist Biographies
 
Dianne Allen
Dianne is an art teacher at a local secondary school and has also taught at Canadore College and Nipissing University. She has a studio at the Capitol Centre in North Bay and has participated in many exhibitions with her fellow studio artists. She has a passion for art and loves to share her knowledge with her many students.
 
 
Kathy Bailey
Kathy’s art education began at Guelph University and was completed at Sheridan College and the University of Toronto. She obtained a Creative Arts diploma and her Bachelor of Arts degree in Art Education. She is one of a handful of artists in Canada who works in the highly specialized field of traditional glaze oil painting. She is able to record an astounding level of colour detail by using the method’s limitless gauges of intensity, opacity, tint and shade. In her paintings, transparency and translucency, light and dark, vivid and quiet colours dance together in rich harmonic melody. Galleries representing Kathy include the Gallery Wall in Toronto, Arttrax in Mississauga, Whispers North Gallery in Minden and the Envers Chapin Gallery in Toronto.

Beth Bouffard
Beth Bouffard received her BA in Fine Arts in 1972. Since then she has painted in oils, watercolours, acrylics and mixed media. For the past four years she has been painting full time in soft pastel. Beth has participated in many group and solo art exhibitions over the years. Her pastel paintings have been well received, garnering three Best of Show awards and numerous 1st and 2nd prizes at juried shows. Beth was chosen to be the Distinguished Artist for the 31st Annual La Cloche Art Show in 2008. Beth is a Signature Member of the Pastel Society of Eastern Canada and a member of Pastel Artist Canada. She lives and paints year-round on the north shore of Lake Huron near the small community of Whitefish Falls, ON.
 
 
Dan Boulanger
Dan Boulanger graduated from Nipissing University with a degree in Economics, having also taken many computer and business related courses as part of his studies. In addition, he graduated from Canadore College with a diploma in Web Site Development. Dan has been teaching at Canadore for two and a half years and enjoys teaching a variety of courses including Introduction to Microcomputers, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Discovering the Internet.
 
 
Keith Campbell
Keith grew in up in Niagara Falls, Ontario. After graduating from high school he attended Sheridan College School of Design where he graduated with a three year diploma in Ceramics and Glass in 1970 and has been a professional artist/craftsperson/educator ever since. His works have been exhibited nationally and internationally in approximately 260 exhibitions. His works are included in numerous private and public collections including the Royal Ontario Museum, the National Museum of Civilization and the Archives of Ontario. He has received approximately 48 awards/honours during his career. He has recently been honored by Canadore College, North Bay, Ontario with the title: Artist in Residence Emeritus. Keith recently retired from Canadore College and is presently working full time in his studio on a major traveling exhibition called, “A Journey Through Time” that will travel to Galleries across Ontario and Canada. This Exhibition will open in September 2011 at the W.K.P. Kennedy Gallery in North Bay, Ontario. The Exhibition will end its tour at Jonathon Bancroft Snell’s Gallery in London, Ontario.
 
 
Carey Carrick
From a very young age it was apparent that Carey’s focus was on visual arts. Carey creates and teaches in a variety of media: oil, watercolour, acrylic, casein, pastel, graphite, coloured pencil, and photography. As an artist she believes that the subject, and the effect and feeling she is trying to create, often chooses the medium. She has been teaching visual arts for many years and enjoys sharing her knowledge, skill and talent with others while encouraging the beginner and challenging the advanced students to reach their full potential.
 
 
Paul Chivers
Paul Chivers works on a freelance basis offering wilderness-oriented stock photography as well as assignment services to commercial, editorial and legal clients and agencies. Paul is an avid outdoorsman; travelling (and photographing) hundreds of kilometers every year by canoe, retracing historic fur trade and more obscure Native routes. His work has been used in slide shows, magazines, books, displays and promotional literature.
 
 
Mike deMoree
Michael deMoree is a well-known North Bay educator and photographer. Mike has lived in the North Bay area for almost 35 years, and has taught photography in Canadore’s Graphic Design and Communications programs. Mike has exhibited his work in various collections in Northern Ontario. Mike was educated in the traditional photographic arts, but is skilled in digital photography.
 
 
James Forsyth
James Forsyth is a North Bay-based photojournalist whose work covers a wide spectrum of subjects. From Olympic athletes to local heroes, from tragedy to joy, he tells stories with his pictures. James’s award-winning work has been widely published in Canada, the United States, and Australia. His artwork appears in private and corporate collections in Canada, the United States, and Europe, and is produced in both black and white and colour. Honoured by his peers with four Picture of the Year awards, he continually strives to make his images unique.
 
 
Stefan Galvanek
Stefan studied at the School of Applied Art and Design in Slovakia and the Ontario College of Art in Toronto. In the 1960’s Stefan worked with charcoal and egg tempra, depicting imaginative figures and portraits. In the late 1970’s he started his “Suitcase” series, placing the human form into a defined space. In his most recent work he is placing figures against the landscape with the figures absorbed in rituals, forming beliefs and giving thanks. Stefan’s work is on display in corporate and private collections in North America and Europe. He is a member and past elected officer of the Ontario Society of Artists, the oldest society in Upper Canada which was founded in 1872. Stefan teaches drawing and oil painting at the George Brown College, ARTISTS 25 Non-Profit Studio in Toronto, and in the Parry Sound area.
 
 
April Gates
What do you get when you combine a potter, painter and musician into one? Work that is lyrical, whimsical and like the seasons, sometimes moody. April moved to the Haliburton Highlands from the Guelph area in 2002 to study ceramics at Fleming's Haliburton School of The Arts. Discovering clay, along with the Highlands landscape and spirited Haliburton community was a defining moment for this emerging artist... she had no choice but to lay down her restless roots and see what this place could inspire. April now has a dynamic career in the Arts that includes creating, teaching, performing and coordinating. April teaches with the Haliburton Arts Council’s Artist in the Schools program, the Frost Center Institute, Fleming College and The Art Hive Maple Lake Artisans Collective, with a variety of offerings for children, youth and adults.
 
 
Arlie Hoffman
Arlie has worked in oil painting for approximately 25 years and watercolour for 12. The northern landscape with its wide vista horizons dominated Arlie’s work for many years, evolving into close-up details that he refers to as introspective landscapes. This exploration will continue, but a shift in interest to the human figure has been evident in his most in recent works. Arlie resides in North Bay where he is Artist in Residence at the Capitol Centre/W.K.P Kennedy Gallery.
 
 
Kevin Hoffman
Following in his father Arlie’s footsteps, Kevin established himself as a successful watercolour artist upon completing his training at both the Ontario College of Art, and Sheridan College, where he majored in editorial illustration (and won Best of Show for his final year portfolio). Kevin enjoys all forms of art, and has a strong interest in music and film, but his main passion from a visual standpoint remains figure work. He has recently begun instructing life drawing for the Continuing Education Department at Canadore College. Kevin has spent most of his career as a Senior Art Director for a marketing firm in North Bay, Ontario.
 
 
Hilton King
Hilton King, an Ojibwa from Wasauksing First Nation, values drum making as part of a healing journey. As he was learning the techniques of drum and hoop making, he began to see the connection between making the drum and personal healing. He is continuing his social work studies to help people achieve more balanced lives. His sessions include explanations about why certain materials are used and their connection to the heartbeat of nature.
 
 
Ted Krug
Like many photographers, Ted entered the digital world by the back door - digitalizing negatives and slides taken with a film camera in order to optimize them in the digital darkroom. This led to the next step - the conversion from a film to a digital camera. His main interest is in the field of wildlife photography. This passion has taken him to all parts of our globe including both of the Polar Regions. In his travels he has worked with many of the top wildlife photographers in the world. He has received the personal coaching from artists like Wayne Lynch, Arthur Morris, John Shaw, Darell Gulin, Joe Van Sand the McDonalds which has given him a wealth of experience to share with his students. David Lewis
Award-winning photographer David Lewis is recognized as one of the last surviving masters of the pigment-control process of the oil, bromoil, and transfer method. His photographs have been on exhibit in Canada, the United States, Cuba, Europe, and Asia. Several of his award-winning images are housed in the permanent load collections of the Professional Photographers of America and the Professional Photographers of Canada. He is the recipient of the prestigious Kodak Gallery Award.
 
 
Bea Lockhart
Bea Lockhart is a professional custom framer with over 25 years of experience. She has studied framing and mat cutting techniques with the famous framer Brian Wolfe. Works of art and photography that Bea has framed hang in private and corporate galleries and collections throughout North America. She uses all conservation materials and is the personal framer for several photographers and artists including her husband Jack. Bea specializes in all types of framing whether it is for art, photography, needlepoint or three-dimensional works and mementos.
 
 
Jack Lockhart
Jack Lockhart is an internationally known Canadian artist who specializes in water media. His paintings hang in private and corporate collections throughout North America and Europe as well as in Australia, Japan and South Africa. Jack has given numerous workshops at Canadore College, the Haliburton School of the Arts, the Canadian Ecology Centre, the Jack Lockhart Art Gallery and for many summers was a resident artist at Ontario North Now at Ontario Place. Jack’s popular workshops include many demonstrations and lots of individual instruction at all levels. His students constantly remark about the variety of art techniques they learned and above all how much fun they had during the workshop.

Erin Lynch
Erin grew up in Haliburton county and went on to study journalism at Ryerson Polytechnic University in Toronto. After graduating, Erin lived a nomadic existence for some years traveling in South East Asia, Mexico and Central America where she discovered her passion for wire jewellery. Although Erin began twisting wire on the beaches of Mexico and Central America, she has taken courses at George Brown College and the Haliburton School of the Arts. An experienced facilitator Erin has taught wire jewellery classes to adults and children in community galleries, schools and studios throughout Ontario. Found objects remain a constant source of inspiration. Natural materials like porcupine quills, seeds and shells transform under Erin's fingers into ethnic organic pieces. Erin predominately works with sterling silver wire, beads and semi-precious stones. She describes her work as eclectic and funky, jewellery that feeds the eye and fuels the spirit. Erin divides her time as a freelance writer and jewellery artisan for her resident studio at the Art Hive called, Bella's Bazaar. Erin Lynch is the founder of the Maple Lake Artisans Collective.

Peter Marsh
Peter is the former, and first, Art Director, of Scarborough’s Visual Arts School at Wexford Collegiate School for The Arts, where he taught from 1965 to 1998. Peter is a member of the Arts and Letters Club of Toronto, and is President of the Canadian Society of Painters in Water Colour. He is “Member Emeritus” of the Scarborough Arts Council, and has been recognized publicly with many other awards including the Mensa Canada President’s Award, and two nominations for the A.B. Patterson award for Excellence in Teaching. A member of many arts organizations and a veteran of endless shows and exhibitions, Peter’s works are held in many public and private collections, in Canada and abroad. Peter’s watercolours fit the Canadian tradition of landscape painting. Although many of his paintings have been painted on site, he also does a large number of studio pieces. The work is typically strong in composition and subtle in colouring with close reference to actual sites. In his work, both abstract and representational, Peter strives for unique meaning and expression. His landscapes remind us of the beauty of our fast changing natural environment, and his abstract pieces are more forceful about problems in our environment.
 
 
John Molnar
John, a graduate of Ontario College of Art and Design, is known for his lush landscape paintings and depictions of old and singular architecture. He has exhibited in Canada and the United States and is the recipient of numerous awards. John has been the subject of feature articles in The Artist’s Magazine, American Artist, International Artist, and Art Avenues. He will be included in an upcoming book entitled My Friends, Today’s Modern Masters published in the U.S. by Jack Richeson & Co.
 
 
Dorothy Stewart
Dorothy was raised in Sudbury and after two decades of camping experiences in beautiful natural areas of Northern Ontario, chose to study Natural Sciences at the University of Toronto. Rather than pursue a career in research, she continued her education while working and obtained an ODH (Ontario Diploma of Horticulture) from Guelph University. In 2003, she began teaching Garden Design at Canadore College, through Artsperience.
 
 
Laura Trach
Laura Trach is passionate about textiles. She works from her studio in the Haliburton Highlands, producing wearable and textile art that is full of colour and texture. Her works include thread painting, leather work, and needle felting. Laura’s work can be seen at the Ethel Curry Gallery, The Art Hive, and The Rails End Gallery in Haliburton, or visit orangecatstudio.com.

Her textile education includes a Fashion Design Diploma and a Textile Surface Design Certificate. Laura loves to teach and share her passion for textiles, and finds it rewarding to watch her students discover that they can create something new.
 
 
Margaret Vant Erve
Margaret Vant Erve is a professional embroidery artist and teacher who lives in Ottawa. Her work depicts the Canadian rural and woodland landscapes, birds and floral studies. Margaret uses a variety of textile paint mediums and crayons to paint her fabric prior to applying hand and machine embroidery. She studied textile arts at Sheridan College, the Ontario College of Art, and with many renowned embroidery teachers. Margaret is a certified teacher with the Embroiderers’ Association of Canada and gives workshops across Canada and in the United States. Her book, ‘Window Gardens in Bloom’ by C&T Publishing was released in 2005 and is now a bestseller. Margaret’s work has also appeared in international textile arts magazines such as STITCH and Workbox. Her work can be found in many private collections across North America. Sheila Ziman
Sheila’s work reflects her environment where she draws inspiration and materials from the surrounding woods, fields, and waters. She is particularly interested in experimenting with materials gathered from nature. In addition, she produces unique quillwork designs on birch bark. Her baskets have been exhibited in galleries and craft shows across Ontario. Sheila has led a variety of basketry workshops and has been teaching at the Haliburton School of the Arts since 1999. She has also written about basketry for The Basketry Express.
