Frequently Asked Questions About Applying For Residence

//

How is acceptance into Residence decided?
Acceptance into Residence is decided by lottery. There are a number of beds allocated to various student groups (first year students, returning students, Aboriginal students, International students). A separate lottery is held to determine who fills the spots in each category. Students who are not successful in the lottery will be placed on a waiting list and their deposits returned until such time as a spot should become available.

What if I apply past the deadline?
Applications received following the lottery will be placed at the end of the waiting list on a first come - first served basis.

How many spaces are there in Residence and where are they located?
On the Residence Profile questionnaire you will be asked to indicate if you wish to live in the townhouses on campus which accommodate 351 students or the apartment complex off campus which accommodates 146 students. We will try to accommodate your first choice but because of limited space we cannot guarantee it. Students in programs located at the Aviation or Commerce Court campuses, who do not have their own vehicle will need to take the city transit for which a bus pass is provided. One direct shuttle bus is available at a designated time each morning to each of these campuses from the residence.

When will I know if I have been accepted?
The lottery for all applicants will be held on the first Monday in May. Following the lottery, results will be mailed out to all applicants. Please do not contact the Residence or College, as results will not be given out over the phone. If you are not immediately accepted into Residence you will be placed on a waiting list. An assigned wait-list number and your $300 deposit will be returned. Should a room become available wait-listed students will be contacted by phone in order of assigned number and will have 24 hours to confirm their acceptance.

Do I get my $300 deposit back if I decide to cancel my application for Residence?
• fully refundable if written cancellation is received prior to the application deadline of May 1.
• $100 is refundable if written cancellation is received on or before August 1st.
• non- refundable if cancelled after August 1st.
Applicable refund cheques will be mailed within 2-3
weeks of receipt of written cancellation notice.

How are roommates assigned?
All applicants must complete the Student Residence Profile. This questionnaire asks various lifestyle and general interest questions designed to assist us in placing students with similar profiles together. It is important that you answer these questions honestly. Included is an option to indicate the name of a friend you may wish to share residence with. However due to various limitations we may not be able to meet all your requirements.

What happens if I do not like Residence?
When placing students we endeavor to match you with applicants that have identified the same interests and lifestyle. If you are not happy with your roommates we will try to rectify the situation including moving you to a vacant residence if one is available. However students may not vacate Residence during the school year. If you do wish to leave Residence and reside off campus you will still be responsible for the remainder of the full year’s Residence fees until a suitable replacement, not currently living in Residence, has moved in and assumed financial responsibility for the remaining fees.

When can I move in?
You can move in to residence the weekend before your program starts. Move in days on the Labour Day weekend are Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 am until 4:00 pm. Move in for students in early start programs such as Aviation will be scheduled on the Saturday only of the weekend before the start of their respective programs.
